MAINTAINING AN HEALTHY RELATIONSHIP WITH YOUR LECTURERS

Healthy and good relationship with your lecturers comes with a lot of advantages even during in and out of school. Having to put in a good recommendation for your work done, standing as a referee during job hunt or becoming your academic mentor or advisor are few of the advantanges you would probably enjoy. It is so saddening that most undergraduate students do not consider it necessary to get closer to their lecturers because they felt that they wouldn’t be needing them after school.
Frankly speaking, some lecturers are not so friendly and very unapproachable which makes students see them as some demi-gods who can be reached only when the situation is strictly official. Some of these lecturers are seldom seen in happy moods often displaying acts of hostility towards the students who see them as sadists. This is not to say that these groups of lecturers are very difficult, in fact, you will be surprised to know that they are one of the east tp approach kind of lecturers in the department.

When it comes to the issue of connecting effectively with your lecturers, a lot of work has to be done. Basically, maintaining a good rapport with your lecturers is not so a difficult task but the way to go about it is a thing that requires sacrifice and enthusiasm. Remember also that your lecturers are human just like you and I who have a life outside the academic world. Most lecturers are preoccupied by the pile of workload of jobs that needed to be done, so they are not most likely to spend their free period with students. Also, due to the nature of their jobs, some students might not have seen their lecturers except during lecture periods. I had a lecturer who was a consulting lecturer in other universities and polytechnics which made it very impossible to know that we had such a lecturer as he only comes to school whenever he had a lecture period.

Notwithstanding, you can still maintain a healthy relationship with your lecturers no matter their tight schedules. Having the right mindset and attitudes are key to building up a long lasting relationship with your lecturers. Good rapport and effective students and lecturers communication increases confidence and trust which is a good way to go in your academic pursuit. In my years in school, what I found out is that most lecturers always longed to be loved by their students. No lecturer would want to come off as unfriendly and intolerant to the students.  In this article, I discussed some of the best approaches to building a healthy relationship with your lecturers.

PUNTUALITY:  Punctuality is a very vital condition that must be strictly followed if you wish to gain the lecturers’ love. No lecturer would like a student that plays truancy or not being serious with academic works. You must try as hard as you can to be early to classes, never miss any lectures, be participative in class and be of good conduct. Make sure to take down notes during lecture, do and submit your assignment as at when due. Always try hard to remain in the good books of the lecturer.

MODE OF DRESSING: An adage says “dress the way that you would like to be addressed”. This actually holds true in this context. If you dress in a sexual explicit manner, you invite the wrong kind of lecturers who would want to exploit you sexually. So when it comes to dressing, moderation is the key. Dress in an appropriate manner. Some lecturers are very weary of students antics in way of dressing. You don’t want your lecturers to see your breasts popping out of your clothes or your pants sagging down your waist, it’s definitely a sign of bad moral attitude and responsible lecturers are not comfortable with that. If you want your lecturers’ friendship, then, you should dress in a way acceptable.

RESPECT AND GRATITUDE: You must learn to respect your lecturers by addressing them by their right names and appropriate titles. You can get the names of all your lecturers in your departmental prospectus. Also, when you feel that a lecturer has done something that you needed to appreciate, please do it nicely and without any ulterior motives. Occasionally, the class can organize a ‘know your lecturer’ party to get to interact more freely outside the four walls of the classroom. This kind of social gathering also avails you the opportunity to take a photo shoot, get some advice, get to know your lecturers better or get your lecturers personal mobile number for easy interaction.

KEEP IN TOUCH: This technique actually does work. Even after your completion of study, you should try as much as you can to keep tab on your lecturers. You can do this by occasionally calling them, sending them mails or paying them some visits. But, in everything you do, always try to keep it moderate less you appear like a bug who constantly stalks the lecturer.

Note that all these does not guarantee a healthy relationship with your lecturers but they play vital role towards ensuring that your lecturers give you a listening ear and also accept your friendship when the situation arises.

You can tell us about how you were able to connect with your lecturers and the techniques you used so that others can learn.
